Add files to Slack

To help you work with your team in Slack, you can add files to your workspace. Files are searchable and shareable beyond Slack, making it easier for everyone to find the information they demand and work together.

How information technology works

Note: Uploading and sharing files may be restricted for Slack Connect conversations, and certain file types can't be added at all. If you lot can't add files to these conversations, find an owner or admin and ask for help.


Add files

Y'all can add files up to 1GB in size.

  1. Drag and driblet up to x files into the Slack message field, or click the
    plus icon side by side to the bulletin field and choose files to add.
  2. Include a message about the file(south) if you'd like. If you lot're adding an image, yous can as well include a clarification.
  3. Send the message.

Tip: If a file management app has been added to your workspace, you tin click the plus icon and then select your preferred app to add together files. These files won't exist stored in Slack, but they'll be searchable and shareable across your workspace.

  1. Open up a channel or direct message (DM).
  2. Tap the plus icon adjacent to the message field.
  3. To add a photograph, tap a recent image or View library. To add a file, tap
    Recent files or Upload file.
  4. Add a bulletin about your file(s) if you'd like.
  5. Tap the paper plane icon to send.

Slack will include a preview of a file as part of your message. If you share an image, the preview will but display inline if it's smaller than eleven,000 pixels on the longest side, or less than 45 million pixels total. Microsoft Function files that are larger than 50 MB will non display a preview.

Tip: Files you add to Slack will be scanned for viruses and other malware, and won't exist uploaded if any are detected. If we incorrectly block a file upload, contact us and nosotros can help.


Scan files

From your desktop, you can scan files added to any public channels, plus the individual channels and DMs you're a function of.

  1. From your desktop, click File browser at the pinnacle of your left sidebar. If you don't come across this choice, click More to find information technology.
  2. To find a specific file, click Filter on the correct side of the search bar and select an choice.

Notation: The file browser isn't available on the Slack iOS or Android apps, but you lot tin utilise the Search tab to find files.


Share files

You can hands share a file that's been added to Slack in another channel or DM, or share it outside of Slack by creating an external link.

  2. Click the Share icon.

  4. Click Share.

Tip: You can besides copy a link to a file or message. Click the
Share icon, and then click Copy Link.

Share files outside of Slack

Create an external link

Revoke an external link

In a public channel, any member can create an external link for a file. In a private channel, only the person who uploaded the file can create an external link for it.

  1. From your desktop, hover over the file you'd like to create a link for.
  2. Click the three dots icon in the top right.
  3. SelectCreate external link.
  4. Copy the link to your clipboard, then clickWashed.

Annotation: If y'all don't run across the pick to create an external link, you may be viewing a file shared from some other service or a Workspace Owner or Admin may take disabled this characteristic. Find an owner or admin to ask for help.

Only the person who uploaded the file can revoke its external link.

  1. From your desktop, hover over the file you lot'd like to revoke a link for.
  2. Click the 3 dots icon in the top correct.
  3. SelectView external link.
  4. ClickRevoke, then clickRevoke It.


Download files

If you'd similar to salve files added to Slack to your desktop, you can download them. On your mobile device, you can only download image files.

  1. From your desktop, detect the file you'd similar to download.
  2. Click the download icon.

Tip: If y'all'd like, y'all may exist able to adjust your default download location.

  1. Tap the prototype you'd like to save.
  2. Tap the iii dots icon.
  3. Tap Relieve Prototype (iOS) or Download (Android).


Delete files

Any fellow member or guest tin delete a file they've uploaded to Slack. Workspace Owners and Admins can delete files that accept been added to public channels and any individual channels or DMs they're in.

  1. Find the file you'd like to delete.
  2. Click the 3 dots icon in the top right.
  3. Select Delete file, so click Yes, delete this file to confirm.
